Pakistan and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) agree to promote regional economic cooperation
Islamabad, April 17, 2025:
Federal Minister for Commerce, Mr. Jam Kamal Khan, held an important meeting with the Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Mr. Nurlan Yermukbayev, at the Ministry of Commerce. The meeting brought together detailed discussions on mutual cooperation to further deepen regional economic integration and address current challenges facing the global trading system.
Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan, while expressing his vision for regional cooperation under the SCO, said that Pakistan is pursuing a comprehensive strategy to enhance economic ties within the ambit of the organization. He said that the importance of the SCO has increased further in view of the challenges facing the traditional multilateral trading system.
Stressing the need to transform current economic problems into opportunities for regional cooperation, he said that coordinated efforts are needed to increase trade volume among SCO member states. Highlighting Pakistan’s strategic geographical position, he termed it as a trade and transit hub for the entire region.
Regarding infrastructure development, the Commerce Minister said that investment in strategic infrastructure can give a new dimension to the region’s connectivity, and such projects should be expanded under the SCO platform so that all member countries can benefit from it.
SCO Secretary General Mr. Nurlan Yermukbayev strongly supported Pakistan’s proposals and appreciated Pakistan’s active role in advancing the economic agenda of the organization. He termed the geographical proximity, historical ties and similar economic structures of the member states as natural advantages for the organization.
He informed the Commerce Minister about the plan to convene a special meeting of SCO Finance Ministers next year. Along with this, he also proposed to conduct a comprehensive review of the SCO Business Entrepreneur Council for its effective role. Furthermore, he also emphasized on improving trade relations among member countries through the establishment of the SCO Trade Information Platform.
Mr. Jam Kamal Khan reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to active participation in all SCO economic cooperation initiatives. The two leaders agreed to further promote regional economic partnership within the framework of the SCO.
